American Military Action Kills Four in Alleged Drug Boat Operation near Venezuelan Coast
Per the announcement from US Defense Secretary the Pentagon's top official, a US strike eliminated four individuals in an operation against a vessel suspected of carrying illegal drugs in international waters near the Venezuelan coast.
The strike took place just a day after US officials informed lawmakers that the country had entered a "non-international armed conflict" against narco-trafficking organizations.
It represents no fewer than the fourth extraordinary and controversial operation conducted by American military beyond US territorial waters over the past month.
Specifics of the Military Operation
The defense secretary stated that the vessel was struck as it was transporting large quantities of illegal drugs destined for the United States, which he described to public health.
“Our intelligence, without a doubt, confirmed that this vessel was trafficking narcotics, the people onboard were narco-terrorists, and they were operating on a known narco-trafficking transit route,” Hegseth said via an online statement.
Hegseth further asserted that the boat was “affiliated with” terrorist groups, a classification introduced in a confidential memo to Congress.
Legal and Political Background
US officials has informed Congress regarding its view that cartels as “non-state armed groups” whose activities in narcotics trafficking represent an armed assault on the US.
This notification included a classified briefing with lawmakers from the Senate defense panel, held recently.
Administration officials attempted to legitimize these operations under the president’s constitutional authority, permitting military action in self-defense during confined conflicts.
Earlier Operations and Global Reaction
Prior to this incident, US forces had conducted attacks on three boats in Caribbean waters, resulting in 17 fatalities and causing global condemnation.
The defense secretary reiterated that such operations “are ongoing” as long as “the attacks on the American people are over”.
Administrative Restructuring and Supervision
The Trump administration has allegedly empowered a White House security body to operate separately within the administration, a shift from previous administrations which had it reporting to the national security adviser.
This restructuring has influenced the planning and execution of such strikes, with some officials being informed about operations only hours before they occur.
Regardless of the administration’s claims, juridical specialists point out that designating cartels as foreign terrorist organizations does not grant additional authority to employ lethal force without solid proof connecting them with another state.
To date, US officials has not provided such evidence regarding the supposed penetration by cartels into Venezuela's regime.
